Amanda Duke - Mixed Media and Textile Artist

Since studying Fine Art BA (Hons) at Goldsmiths College and a PGCE at Brighton University I have led creative departments and taught Art in local secondary schools. I now make my own work and run workshops for adults and children.

I work instinctively and in response to my surroundings and usually work with paper, cotton and silk fabrics, natural dyes and stitch, print-based media and collage. Inspired by relief and collage works by Ben Nicholson and Kurt Schwitters, the Spirit Cloths of Jude Hill and embroideries of Junko Oki, this gives clues about my interest in abstraction and my delight in arranging the visual elements. I have been exploring natural dye processes since a residency at Sussex Prairie Garden, West Sussex. My focus on capturing the very essence of the plants, impressions left through the changing seasons, warmth and light of the summer sun led to outcomes in stitch, screen print, drawing, natural dye and paper collage. These outcomes, my attempt to re-create a sense of the prairies. I am now establishing a dye garden at home and will continue my reconnection with nature after many delightful and productive years in the classroom. Future themes will include biodiversity and rewilding.

Art and Textile Workshops

I simply love teaching. Currently, I run courses for adults at Sussex Prairie Garden, Amberley Chalk Pits Museum and at home. From January I can be booked for adult groups and am willing to travel. Please contact me for further details.
